Botox is a popular cosmetic treatment for unsightly wrinkles and lines. These facial wrinkles can make you look older, tired or even angry.
Botox, also known as botulinum toxin A, is a medication known as a neurotoxin. It works by inhibiting or blocking nerve transmission to muscles. Normal nerve conduction causes a muscle to contract. If the nerve conduction is blocked, the muscle cannot contract. It becomes limp or paralyzed.
Botox for Facial Wrinkles and Lines
Normal wrinkling of the skin is a result of aging of the skin and contraction of muscles just below the skin’s surface. As we age, our skin becomes less elastic. Contraction of the muscles accentuates the wrinkles and furrows which develop.
Paralyzing these muscles smooths out the wrinkles and lines.
We commonly treat facial wrinkles and lines, such as;
- Frown Lines – aka glabellar lines between your eyebrows
- Frontal Lines – across the forehead
- Crow’s Feet – aka canthal lines at the corner to the eye
- Marionette Lines – on the sides of the mouth
- Smoker Lines – around the lips
Not all wrinkles and lines can be treated with Botox. Wrinkles which are noticeable when your face is completely relaxed may be better treated with dermal fillers such as Juvederm.
There are other medical conditions which are treated with Botox including;
- Hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating of the armpits or palms)
- Chronic migraine headaches
- Hemifacial spasms
- Neck spasm
- Shoulder spasms
- Blepharospasm (spasm of the eyelids)
- Bladder incontinence
Botox Treatments
The effects of Botox are temporary and usually last 3-6 months. The effects vary based upon the severity of the condition, the condition, your age and, in the case of wrinkles, the health of your skin.
Treatments should not be given any more frequently than every 3 months.
Injections are given at the Renew office and take about 10-20 minutes. There is usually little or no pain. Dr. Lizardo will use a very small needle to minimize any possible discomfort. There is usually no “recovery time” after each treatment.
Results usually begin in just a few days with full effect occurring after 10 days or so.
Did you know that you can host a Botox party? We send our registered nurse out to you. Invite three or more friends who would love to look as young they feel. Discounts are given to the host and your guests will pay a reduced rate or zone pricing for their Botox.
